CalGreen's Celebration of Women's History Month and International Women's Day

SACRAMENTO, Calif.–With its mission to advance systems thinking and the Triple Bottom Line, the California Green Academy (CalGreen), and its sustainable transportation blog TransportiCA, are proud to be celebrating this March “Women’s History Month,” along with the global annual celebration, “International Women’s Day” (Friday, 08 March). Women’s History Month has its origins as a national celebration in 1981, when Congress passed Public Law (“PL”) 97-28, authorizing the week beginning 07 March 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987, after petitioning by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed PL 100-9, designating March as “Women’s History Month.” Since 1995, Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama have also issued a series of annual proclamations reaffirming “Women’s History Month.” International Women's Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, and is a day–08 March–when women are recognized for their achievements, without regard to divisions–whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic, or political. This celebration first came from labor movements at the turn of the twentieth century, occurring in North America and Europe. In 1975, 08 March was designated by the United Nations as “International Women’s Day.” Since then, annual events have been fortified by four global U.N. women’s conferences. For Women’s History Month, TransportiCA will feature groundbreaking and historic women in transport and energy, in addition to, the Book Club’s March 2019 selections of “Attracting and Retaining Women in the Transportation Industry” and “Women’s Energy Entrepreneurship: A Guiding Framework and Systematic Literature Review” (news release). CalGreen will also report live from “Equal Justice for Women,” a special program in celebration of International Women's Day, taking place on Saturday, 09 March, in San Francisco. The event explores the impact of gender equality and the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goal 16–promotion of just, peaceful, and inclusive societies, bringing together leaders who champion gender parity, locally and nationally. Scheduled program speakers include Latisha Taylor, Founder and CEO, HealthMeasurednet; Nancy E. O’Malley, J.D., Alameda County District Attorney; Dr. Hediana Utarti, Anti-Trafficking Program Coordinator for the S.F. Asian Women’s Shelter; Michael J. Hartman, J.D., S.F. District Attorney’s Office, and former Rule of Law Director for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (Kabul); and the program will be moderated by Tracey Milligan, Chair of the United Nations Association (UNA) S.F. Chapter Women’s Committee.

Equal Justice for Women occurs Saturday, 09 March, from 14:00-16:00, at the S.F. War Memorial Veteran's Building, and is presented by the UNA S.F. Chapter, American Legion Post 315, and the UNA Marin County Chapter. The cost of attendance is $10.00 for the general public, free with a qualified membership, and advanced registration is highly recommended.
